Post-combustion carbon capture (cracking)


Technology Description

The fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) unit is responsible for 20-55% of total CO2 emissions from a typical refinery. Post-combustion technology to capture the CO2 from the flue gas, with a volumetric CO2 concentration of 10-20% is available, but has not yet been demonstrated in a refinery context.

Relevance for Net Zero

Post-combustion capture at a fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) unit has lower CO2 avoidance costs than oxy-fuelling combustion, but oxy-fuelling combustion has the advantage of increasing the throughput of the FCC.
