Gravity-based storage
7
Technology Description
Gravity-based storage uses electricity to lift an object, such as water (see pumped hydro storage) or a block of concrete. Energy is stored in the object as gravitational potential energy. When electricity is needed, the object is lowered to convert the potential energy into electricity through a turbine.
Relevance for Net Zero
In contrast to PSH and CAES, it is not limited by topographic or geological conditions.
