Electrocaloric cooling
4
Technology Description
Solid state cooling alternative to vapour compression technologies. Applying an external field (electric field) under adiabatic conditions leads to temperature increase of the caloric material which corresponds to a change of polarisation. Conversely, when decreasing adiabatically the external fields, the temperature of the material decreases to lower values compared to the initial one.
Relevance for Net Zero
Many alternatives are less environmental friendly. Compared to magnetocaloric technologies, the electric fields required can be supplied more easily compared with magnetic fields, with higher power densities and compactness. While material efficiency is high and the cycle is thermodynamically reversible, the cycle is not yet suitable for heating and cooling applications.
