Electric-powered steam reforming (methane)
4
Technology Description
In electric-powered steam reformers, the use of natural gas for providing the heat needs of the process is replaced by direct electrification, thus improving the overall efficiency of the whole process and decreasing process emissions by avoiding exhaust gases
Relevance for Net Zero
Electric methane reforming can decrease significantly the CO2 emissions associated with hydrogen production and could play an important role in net zero pathways, particularly for the creation of new production capacities, as long as the CO2 is permamently stored and upstream emissions of the fuel supply are minimised or completely avoided. However, its deployment is expeted in the medium- to long term due to its low TRL
