Battery electric ship
8-9
Technology Description
In battery electric ships, the power for propulsion and auxiliaries comes from batteries, which are charged while at berth from the on-shore electricity grid. Given the current limitations of the energy density of batteries, battery electric ships will mostly find applications on short-distance routes.
Relevance for Net Zero
In spite of the technology having a low deployment in the NZE Scenario by 2050 within the overall shipping sector, for short distance and domestic shipping it can play an important role: 5% of the energy consumption of domestic shipping by 2050 under the NZE Scenario. For instance, it is a suitable technology for circulation in future zero-emissions zones on water.
