Virtual net metering - community scale solar
9
Technology Description
Virtual net metering (VNM) is a bill crediting system in which solar is not used on-site but is instead externally installed and shared among subscribers. In this case, subscribers receive credits on their electricity bill for excess energy produced. Community solar is an alternative to rooftop solar wherein homeowners collectively pay for a solar system that provides power to multiple households.
Relevance for Net Zero
As 40% of solar PV capacity will be on rooftops in 2070, community-scale solar offers a solution for homeowners that do not qualify (or are not willing) to have solar panels on their roofs.
