Saline formation

Technology Description

CO2 storage involves permanent retention of CO2 in underground geological reservoirs (> 800 metres deep). The main types of geological reservoirs suitable for CO2 storage are deep saline formations and depleted oil and gas reservoirs.

Relevance for Net Zero

CO2 storage is an essential element of the CCUS chain. CCUS is a key technology enabling emissions reductions across the power, industry and fuel transformation sectors. Furthermore, it can deliver negative emissions by removing CO2 from the atmosphere and storing it permanently underground.
