Physical absorption (methanol)
7
Technology Description
Physical absorption uses a liquid solvent to absorb CO2 from flue gases that have high CO2 partial pressures, without a chemical reaction occurring. Common physical solvents include Selexol (dimethyl ethers of polyethylene glycol) and Rectisol (methanol).
Relevance for Net Zero
Using physical absorption-based CO2 capture in coal-based methanol production has good potential to reduce emissions. Along with electrolytic hydrogen, CCUS is one of the key competitors for reducing methanol production emissions. Note that capture is not needed for natural gas-based methanol production, as the CO2 is in a quantity in the syngas that can be used in the final chemical.
