Phase Change Materials (PCMs)


Technology Description

Latent heat is stored using phase-change materials that take advantage of the (specific) latent heat associated with a phase transition, generally from solid to liquid to the other, though this is not as efficient at high temperatures. Phase-change materials are appealing because of their high energy storage density.

Relevance for Net Zero

A higher integration of variable renewable energy will increase the need of flexibility and energy storage. While Li-ion batteries have been largely deployed, issues around costs and a more limited lithium availability, call for alternative technologies. In addition, sometimes excess heat may be available.
