Technology Description

Large towing kites are attached to the ship with long cables to access strong winds 100 metres above the ship. This way traction is provided to the ship, in addition to the propulsion provided by the ship's engine. This system can be fully automated and thus does not require a dedicated crew on board to manage its operations.

Relevance for Net Zero

Kites can reduce the fuel consumption of ships by 10 to 20%. They cannot be used at all times, because they require clement weather conditions and an appropriate wind direction. Kites are more likely to complement the power provided by the engine, thus reducing fuel consumption, rather than replacing the need for an engine. Depending on the technology, kites may also require additional space on the deck, leading to trade-offs with space availability for cargo.
