Hybrid fuel-cell - jet-turbine aircraft propulsion system
3-4
Technology Description
Hybrid fuel-cell jet engine aircraft powered by hydrogen could potentially incorporate the benefits of each respective design: i.e. the higher power output of hydrogen jet engines (needed for take-off and to enable larger aircraft and longer ranges), as well as the greater efficiency of electric motors to provide additional propulsion as well as auxiliary power.
Relevance for Net Zero
Hybrid H2 aircraft designs could leverage the benefits of smaller fuel-cell electric aircraft with the range and power of hydrogen jet engine designs.
