Adsorption heat pump (thermally driven)
9
Technology Description
Heat pump driven by thermal energy (delivered by steam or by combustion of natural gas), instead of being driven by electric energy (for mechanical heat pumps). Based on adsorption (with a solid adsorption medium) and evaporation of a refrigerant.
Relevance for Net Zero
Lower efficiencies compared to electric heat pumps, but greater than traditional gas boilers, and they can be fuelled by biogas and can integrate solar, geothermal or other heat sources.
